Call me crazy, but I love chick-lit. Okay, so maybe I write too many scathing reviews to love chick-lit, but I definitely have strong positive feelings for well-written chick-lit. Yup, that’s the accurate statement right there. Catch a Falling Star did not disappoint. While it definitely wasn’t as good as some other chick-lit novels I’ve read, it definitely was in the top twenty-five percent!

In Catch a Falling Star, protagonist Carter Moon falls in the vicinity of celebrity Adam Jakes. She’s the only one who doesn’t fall under his spell, much to her own dismay. Of course, there’s a plot twist, and it’s in the next sentence. She’s now recruited to play the role of his new girlfriend. It seems like a win-win situation: Adam improves his public image and Carter gets money for her financially struggling family. However, Carter never expected that she’d actually start falling for Adam Jakes. How can she get herself out of this mess (although in my opinion, it’s not that much of a mess…)?

Carter is a pretty likable girl. Well as likable as a seemingly good-girl can get. She gave up a dancing scholarship because she wanted to stay close to her family. She doesn’t have a Facebook or an Instagram. This self-professed hick can’t be likable, right? Wrong. I really enjoyed how well she expressed her age. She actually seemed like a seventeen year old! That in itself is a miracle. While she did get a little immature at times, overall she was a pretty great protagonist.

Adam Jakes is a different story though. I feel like the author tried to paint him as a big star, but for some reason, she didn’t succeed. Maybe I wasn’t attracted to his behavior. Sure he wasn’t a huge jerk, but he wasn’t a great love interest either. He seemed to lack character. I really wanted him to be more likable, but I just wasn’t into him.

As with many chick-lit books about snagging celebrities, Catch a Falling Star was pretty cheesy. I won’t deny that at times I was literally cringing. The movie’s called A Christmas Cheryl! How cheesy can we get? However, as cheesy as I found certain parts, Catch a Falling Star wasn’t ridiculously cheesy. It was still tolerable.

Although certain parts of Catch a Falling Star definitely could use improvement, overall it was a fun, charming read. It’s coming out on the 29th, so be sure to pick up a copy then!
