As soon as I heard that there was going to be a new dystopian series that featured people with paranormal abilities I knew I needed to get my hands on it! I’ve read a lot of dystopian, even vampire dystopian, but I’ve never read a story that combined supernatural abilities in a dystopian world.
Glitch takes place in the future after a catastrophic D-Day has forced what is left of humanity underground, away from the toxic surface. The Community is a world free of pain and war, where everyone is implanted which a chip that protects them from their destructive emotions and thoughts that destroyed the old world.
Zoe is a part of this world, that is until her chip begins to malfunction and she starts glitching and having her own thoughts, feelings, and a secret she must keep at all costs: uncontrollable telekinetic powers. In a world where any anomalies are immediately reported Zoe must keep her glitching a secret. But when she begins meeting a group of other glitchers with abilities like hers she realizes that she does not have to be alone. Together they will plan their escape from The Community risking everything they’ve gained in the process.
This book pleasantly surprised me as I found it much more enjoyable than I had even thought it was going to be. It could have easily been just like any other dytopian with slightly different parameters, but it was not. The Community Uppers consisted of riveting and multidimensional villains, there were many plot twists that actually surprised me, and Zoe quickly became one of my favorite dystopian heroes with her mixture of new found emotions including determination, guilt, and love.
Besides starting off somewhat slow, which often happens in novels where an entire world needs to be set up, once the plot got started Glitch was fast paced. Because it takes place in the future, Anastasiu has added a new vocabulary of curse words. I’ve only read one other book that does this and both times it was difficult to get used to. But it is found all throughout the novel and so once I got used to it I even found myself using shunting and cracking mentally as curse words. The romance is typical as it happened quickly without much leading up to it but it was not too overpowering that it takes away from the story which I believe is one of the most important things in a dystopian novel. The male hero is one that many will fall in love with for his patience and loyalty to Zoe (not to mention he is adorable!).
My favorite part of this book, and the reason why I gave it 9 stars, was that it was unpredictable. From the very beginning I had an idea in my head, based on other dytopians, of how this book would go but I was surprised at almost every turn. There were some huge plot twists at the end that I absolutely never saw coming. It is refreshing in a genre that has become so popular to see a book that still leaves you unable to guess what will happen.
I am also ecstatic to have found that we wont have to wait long for the second installment in the series! Override will be available February 19th just over six months from now! I definitely recommend everyone go out and read Glitch when it comes out next Tuesday!
