Book review: ‘One Day’ is a fun, sweet, moving book by David Nicholls

Rating [9 out of 10]

After watching the trailer for ‘One Day‘ featuring Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway I was hooked: I needed to know what this book was about before the movie came out. And let me tell you, its one of the best friendship/love stories I’ve read and I really, really hope the movie does justice to the book.

‘One Day’ starts in July 15th 1988, Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, our two main characters that we are going to read about for the next 20 years, have finally graduated college. During these four years in school, Emma had developed a secret crush on Dexter who is too self-centered and of course, he never notices Emma, that is… until graduation day. On July 15th, they hook up, none of them wanting to end whatever it had started that night, as a one night stand. Both parties agree to remain friends, and this is how every year, for the next twenty years we read about Dexter and Emma’s life: their careers highs and lows, their love lives, their expectations on the future.

Emma Morley is a character that you can’t help but love as the book progresses, she is very witty and with funny remarks throughout the book you will find yourself laughing, she is a girl who thinks that he can change the world, and this is what draws Dexter to her. Dexter is a character that throughout the book is still finding himself, wondering what is his true happiness and where his career will take him. It needs to be said, both characters are at their best when they’re together.

After that night, the author David Nicholls, goes back and forth with dates and events that happened to both of the characters, keeping the book interesting and with a good pace, Nicholls also misses out on some of the big scenes/events in the book, rather writing about the consequences of such and leaving the reader to wonder what happened. Don’t worry! At the end you’ll understand everything and why some scenes didn’t even need to be there in the first place. The reader will enjoy the years as they pass by, reading about Emma and Dexter: how while one of them decided to be single the other entered a relationship, how love letters between the two never got sent, how phone calls that were supposed to declare each others love were never picked up, and things inevitably lead to stretching their friendship for years, ending up with being together at last, what everybody knew it would happen.

I recommend this book to EVERYONE (yes Gaby including you, please give this book a try!) its a beautiful story, you’ll see how after all their highs and lows, everything becomes a full circle. Em and Dex (Dex and Em) realize after so many years how the only constant person they have is each other, how their lives changed after that one day, and what big of an impact both created to each others lives that will last forever. Boy or girl, grab a copy of ‘One Day’! or if not at least wait for the movie, now that I know what’s going to happen I can tell that both Jim Sturgess and Anne Hathaway were great cast choices and can wait to see the film!
