Throughout The Girl Guide, Christine Fonseca helps young readers to understand the importance of: planning, having priorities, conducting mature arguments and managing their online lifestyle. She does this through the use of quizzes, what-if scenarios and simple straight-forward speech. All of which will help them figure out who they are and where they fit in in this turbulent world.
What I really found interesting were the side notes she added at the end of each chapter. Other than the fact that some had very stylish and artistic borders, they were also fabricated in such a way that a teenage girl could enjoy evaluating herself and even build her self-esteem. They encouraged and nudged on positive ideas. They even included little pointers and tips from older girls.
This particular approach to aiding female youths in finding their own voice, also reminded me books such as: Chicken Soup series, What I Wish I’d Known in High School: A Crash Course in Teenage Survival by John Bytheway, How to Win Friends and Influence People for Teen Girls by Dale Carnegie and
Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff for Teens: Simple Ways to Keep Your Cool in Stressful Times by Richard Carlson.
Regardless of how much in common these books have with The Girl Guide: Finding Your Place in a Mixed-Up World, Fonseca brings a new age, fresh, starkly down to earth, girl aid in her book that I wish I had when I was growing up.
