Well… I was unimpressed. I was expecting a film better than the previous two, and it was pretty much on par with the other films. I enjoyed this one a lot less, and that may be only because I went in with higher expectations.
In Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Sam Witwicky (Shia LaBeouf) is out of college and on the job hunt. He can’t handle taking on remedial jobs after saving the world twice. He has a beautiful new girlfriend (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), who is currently financing his life. When Sam is attacked by Decepticons, he’s thrown back into mix and is on a mission along with the good Transformers (like Optimus Prime and Bumble Bee) to save the world once again.
I can’t really say that the storyline was better than the previous ones. While the visual effects were amazing, a vast and noticeable improvement over the last ones, the film dragged in some places. My interest kept wavering up and down throughout the movie. One moment I was very into it, and the next I was trying to not yawn so much. I thought the dialogue was marginally better. The jokes were better at least. However, director Michael Bay should’ve cut at least a half hour off the movie. Funny thing is that the previous Transformers films are about the same length, and I was way less bored watching those.
Another reason I was excited to see the new Transformers was because it was filmed in Chicago last Summer. I remember seeing Michigan Ave and the downtown bridges all “destroyed.” I even spotted Shia LaBeouf and his then-girlfriend, Carey Mulligan, at the movies. It all looked very cool. Seeing it onscreen was one of the only non-disappointing things. The last 45 minutes of the movie soars, and is basically the best part of the movie. It stopped me from full-out hating it.
Don’t go to see this movie expecting it to be the best of the three. Is it worth your time and money? Maybe. If you really love the Transformers movies, just go and see it. It actually has very good 3D and the effects are amazing. I saw it an IMAX 3D and had a couple WHOA moments. If you’re not too crazy about it, I guess choose not to see it at all. In my opinion, it’s the type of movie that can be appreciated most on a big screen. So unless you have a souped-up home theater system, check it out at the cinema.
