TV Review: Gossip Girl 6×07 – “Save the Last Chance”

Gossip Girl Episode 6×07 – “Save the Last Chance”- Aired on 11/26/2012

Tonight’s Gossip Girl was a surprise for me. Why is that? Because it was actually a good episode.

In “Save the Last Chance,” Serena and Dan agree to make amends with their friends, so that when they go public with their relationship, there won’t be anyone in the way. Serena reunites with Blair by helping her scheme a success out of her pop-shop opening. Serena tells her that they’ll trick Sage into helping Blair. At first, it works, but then Sage finds out and tries to sabotage Blair’s first major public event for her new juniors line. Blair ends up on top though. Her line is a big success, and nothing Sage planned could deter great fashion.

All the while, Ivy is blackmailing Bart and Chuck by holding on to evidence of Bart’s illegal oil deals. But in a quite unexpected twist, we find out that Ivy hasn’t been working with Lola; she’s been scheming with William Van Der Woodsen (William Baldwin). Not only that, they’re in love with each other, and she’s only with Rufus to help them get back at Lily. When Ivy is meeting with William, Rufus sees them kiss, and this is right after Lily tries to enlighten him about Ivy’s true motives. Alas, Rufus sees the light (Hallelujah!) and confronts Ivy and tells her to leave. Yet, that’s alright with Ivy because she still has the evidence to blackmail Bart and Chuck into ruining Lily’s life.

Bart finally tells Nate that he co-signed on the loan that is helping The Spectator stay on track. Of course, Bart uses it to control Nate, forcing him to tell Chuck’s plans. After finding out, Bart goes to Ivy’s hotel room and says he’ll divorce Lily to get the evidence back. Ivy says that’s not enough and starts stripping in order to take a provocative photo with Bart to publish online. Chuck arrives as this is happening and tries to bargain with Ivy. It’s all fruitless because they quickly realize she doesn’t have the evidence anymore. It’s then that we switch over to Rufus arriving at Lily’s apartment with the evidence in hand. Chuck finds out and leaves Ivy and Bart to stop Lily from destroying it. Sadly, no matter what Chuck says (all true), Lily doesn’t believe him and throws the evidence into the fire place. Chuck is devastated. And you know what Chuck likes to do when he’s devastated? Make sure he can never be happy again! He tells Blair that they can’t ever be together. (Sigh.) Wanting to celebrate her major victory, Blair can only feel heartbroken.

At the end, it seems the only characters who aren’t in despair are Dan and Serena. Last week, I rejoiced at the reunited couple. In that final scene, I was relishing the fact that they both seemed happy and content, and it felt like such a huge indicator that Gossip Girl was ready to end. And then Georgina called Dan, and we learned his true motives…

Seriously, Dan! You’re writing a Serena chapter. The past 6 years didn’t give you enough material, you bitter asshat?!

Even though I loved Nelly Yuki’s advice to him earlier this season about not letting the Upper East Side dictate him, there’s a way to do it without being as vindictive and cruel as he’s being. It’s sort of weird to see Dan as one of this season’s villains. With only three episodes left, what could this mean for Derena? And for everyone else? These questions have me worried, but I’m glad I have them. It means that I can count on something unpredictable and hopefully brilliant. That’s what I’m really hoping for in a Gossip Girl finale.
