C2E2 2013: Cosplay, R.L. Stine, Game of Thrones & More!

DSC_0156This year’s Chicago Comic and Entertainment Expo has come and gone. Compared to last year, the event seemed smaller and downgraded a bit. The focus on comic was stronger than ever, but the entertainment aspect felt a little lacking. Comic book fans were likely very pleased, but since I’m not much of a comic book reader, I have to admit I was disappointed with this year’s show.

However, there were a few great things to experience at C2E2 2013. There were great costumes, awesome comedy sketches and particularly entertaining panels from Goosebumps author R.L. Stine and a couple actors from Game of Thrones. My brief thoughts and pictures (courtesy of Amanda Trevino) of C2E2 are below:

The Show Floor

The Show Floor was a smaller this year and maybe wasn’t as decked out as last year’s. Still, we found some great things, like The Hunger Games Costume Exhibit, and met new artists in Artists Alley.

Cosplay

One of my favorite things about pop culture events is cosplay. I never dress up myself, but I love seeing how creative some fans can be with their costumes. There were many great ones at C2E2 this year.

The Nerdologues

Taking a break from walking the Show Floor, we stopped by the Variant Stage to check out The Nerdologues, a comedy show created by a group of Chicago comedians. Their sketches explore and parody nerd culture. These guys (and gal) put on a funny, entertaining and at times heart-warming show. I was definitely surprised by how much I enjoyed them. Check them out on their website and on Twitter at @nerdologues.

R.L. Stine Q&A

As a kid, I absolutely loved the Goosebumps books and TV series, so the chance to hear R.L. Stine talk in person about his works was too good to pass up. The R.L. Stine Q&A was probably my favorite thing I did at C2E2, hands down. It was funny with Stine’s dry wit, endearing because of all that nostalgia wafting in the room, and informative to writers like myself.

Game of Thrones Q&A

Actors James Cosmo (Lord Commander Jeor Mormont) and Natalie Dormer (Margaery Tyrell) answered questions on what it’s like being part of an epic TV show. As a GoT fan, I really appreciated what they had to say about their work ethic, how they approach their characters and working with the rest of the cast and crew. A lot of thought goes into making Game of Thrones into the show that it is. This Q&A offered a ton of insight into that aspect.
