The Age of Adaline Teaches Us A Thing or Two About Fashion

The Age of Adaline is proving to be an exquisite ode to fashion throughout the decades. Blake Lively is obviously gorgeous, but this film proves that she would’ve been gorgeous in any previous decade as well. The film follows the [very long] life of Adaline, a woman who has taken a sip from the “fountain of youth” and lives forever looking young, and basically fooling everyone around her into thinking she actually belongs in that era. One of the ways she fits in is dressing the part. However, although some decades were defined by their trends, it’s safe to say some trends live on, no matter how long ago they were considered fashionable. We’ll take a look back at fashion throughout the past several years and identify trends that have moved on with the ages. We’ll tackle three iconic looks from The Age of Adaline and see how some fashion trends have remained relevant until this day. But first, take a look at how the costume designers made Blake Lively the most fashionable member of each decade in this exclusive behind the scenes look at the making of The Age of Adaline.

Now, we all know the basic trends from the 1920’s. We’ve come to know it as “Gatsby Theme” thanks to the classic by F. Scott Fitzgerald, “The Great Gatsby”. In The Age of Adaline, nothing was spared; from the clothes to the makeup to the hair– they nailed it. One of the trends that is very popular today is the bold lip. As seen below, the movie poster emphasized on that. Bold lips are rocked by some of our favorite stars, like Emma Stone, Shailene Woodley and even Adaline herself, Blake Lively.

Jumping a few years ahead and looking at Adaline in the 1950’s, we see scarves are definitely a trend. Now, short scarves aren’t exactly “in” right now, but I remember a time (maybe in the 90’s-00’s) when short scarves were all the trend. However, this trench coat is fabulous! I feel like trench coats will always be fashionable and “in”. Can we talk about those wonderful curls? Do they ever go out of style, really? Also, although umbrellas are accessories and not really items of clothing, this curved handle is definitely in these days– I see them being sold constantly at stores like Forever 21 and Target! I guess they know how much we like to embrace past fashion trends. You could say the 1950’s had my favorite trends, for sure.

Last we’ll dive in to present-day Adaline where we can see how her previous fashion trends have been incorporated to her look. We see her with the bold lip, hair pulled back, yet still somehow relaxed and wavy in its own way. Something that is trendy today is the dissheveled look. You know the one? Where you try really hard to look like “I woke up like thissssss”? No? Just me? Okay moving on.
