What an incredibly packed finale of The Fosters! As expected, the season four finale was filled with incredibly shocking moments. As Jesus struggles to come to terms with the knowledge of Emma’s abortion, his insecurities about Brandon kick in. Ultimately respecting Emma’s decision despite his feelings about it, the drama then ends on Jesus discovering Brandon’s involvement with it all. More honest, open, and complex conversations about abortion (like this one) are what we need.
The introduction of the new principal at Anchor Beach didn’t seem all too interesting, not even when he purposely set out to get Monte fired. The private school storyline didn’t seem to be going too far but this episode washed those doubts away. With the school board voting to officially turn the school from charter to private, the students plan a protest that demands their voices be heard. That final scene of the line of students, hand in hand in the rain, chanting “education is a right, not just for the rich and white” could’ve veered to the side of the melodramatic, but it was perfectly executed and it made me incredibly happy to see students claiming their rights represented on this show.
The biggest shocker of the night came with the unexpected collision of the human tracking story of Diamond and Callie’s case. The episode opens with new evidence further incriminating Callie, forcing her lawyers to consider a plea to three years in prison. As Stef and Mike work to get something that can prevent Callie from going to jail, we see Callie coming to understand her fate. This realization, although frustrating, grants us a really sweet (and now rare) moment between Callie and Jude. As they walk along the beach she seems to be saying her goodbye, urging her brother to use his anger to fight for what’s right, something Jude reminds us Callie has always done. As Mike and Stef dig deeper into the Martha Johnson murder case, they suddenly (albeit unrealistically) get the confession they need from Troy to get Callie’s case dismissed. However, whenever Callie seems to be reaching the surface, something always drags her back down. Thinking that she has nothing left to lose, Callie ends up running away with Diamond, back to her pimp. Trying to save someone else gets Callie into the most dangerous situation yet.
Will Stef be able to find Callie and get her out of harm’s way? How will the knowledge of Brandon’s involvement in Emma’s decision affect Jesus? How will the rest of the protest storyline play out?
