Is this the end of Big Brother Canada? That’s what die-hard fans of the reality TV program are hoping will not come true. After five years on the air, Big Brother Canada will be taking a break for the 2018 season (which would’ve been Big Brother Canada 6) and effectively be placed on hiatus. The announcement was made by BBCA host Arisa Cox over Twitter on the same day of the annual Corus TV upfront – Corus/Global TV is the network that currently airs the program.
While a hiatus is not unknown in the world of TV, fans of the show (this writer included) are worried for the future of the series due to past precedent. A hiatus is normally the first step towards cancellation, and this has happened in the past. Canadian Idol was placed on hiatus after a few seasons with the promise of returning, but to this day, the reality TV singing competition never aired again. This was different from the Canada’s Next Top Model situation, which was delayed/on hiatus due to broadcast rights issues.
Fans immediately jumped on Twitter with the #SaveBBCAN and #BBCAN6 hashtags. Tweets, both from fans and past houseguests, have expressed love for the show and urging the network to bring it back. An online petition has also been created. Though, time will tell if any of these tactics will work.
The latest season of Big Brother Canada to air was Big Brother Canada 5. This iteration saw 10 newbies enter the house to compete with (and against) 10 previous Big Brother Canada veterans. Big Brother Canada 3 contestant Kevin Martin walked away with the big prize, beating out newbies Karen and Demetres.
The season was met with a positive reaction from fans; however, the series has been in a steady decline in ratings. Rising costs with declining ratings is never a good mix. There is no word yet on when Big Brother Canada will return to TV.
