Johnathan is alive! Sebastian is the demon child of Valentine, but instead of dying in a fire, he lived with his father until Valentine decided to send him to Hell one day. Another layer has been added to Sebastian’s character and his attitude and actions make more sense now knowing that Valentine is his father. On the one hand you want to feel bad for him, but knowing that he’s killed people for fun draws away from any sympathy. Being sent to Hell and having each layer of your skin burned off definitely calls for a revenge plot. The problem is that Sebastian gave in to his father. Saying that he missed his son instantly pardoned the fact that he sent Sebastian to Edom for all those years. It makes sense that he’d want love from his dad, but I feel that his torture over the last couple years would override his desire to be loved. We’ll see what happens between the two of them.
As for his sister, Clary, she went on a slightly interesting trip. Her powers came back and she was able to create a portal so powerful that they traveled to Idris. It’s good to see her becoming stronger since the last couple of episodes put her in a bad light with the whole Simon situation. Her fighting skills have definitely grown since it took both Izzy and Jace to take her down. The two biggest issues with her are that she jumps head first into situations and denies her feelings. Going to Idris without any plan was a dumb move and it almost cost her life, especially since Ithuriel chose to give her info instead of healing her. She also keeps trying to stay away from Jace to only later have a moment where the two of them lock eyes for awhile.
Jace learned more about his past, specifically that he’s the opposite experiment of Sebastian, which might foreshadow that he has to take him down. What’s cool is that he’s getting the hang of using his powers. He healed Clary with his rune, and with their powers combined they could be a force to be reckoned with. The only issue was that he lost Clary. It wasn’t clear on how they got lost, and it was assumed that he might have been trying to stay away from a werewolf pack, but again it wasn’t clear.
Alec finally got to confront his father about the affair. His dad didn’t really say much on the subject which was a shame, but he was really helpful. He saved Alec’s job and got Izzy to Idris. He even informed his son that the Soulsword is still missing, which could prove useful for The Institute if they can retrieve it. The question is if Alec will tell Magnus that the sword is still out there.
Last, but not least, is Simon and Maia. It was nice that Maia went out of her way to help a friend. In fact, she went above and beyond by going to that dinner and lying about what Simon really wants to atone for doing. The only slight issue is that Maia was throwing out signals that said she was interested in Simon, but last time we saw her she was making out with Jace. Also, she knows that Simon just got out of a relationship so it wouldn’t be smart to jump into one with him. I hope the show doesn’t force the two of them together sooner than they should be.
