Network dramas make you cry, hurt, love and even sometimes laugh. While dramas typically deal with heavy material anywhere from family issues to political corruption, they always have millions coming back for more every week.
Of all the dramas returning to TV during the 2017-18 season, here are the top five you need to be watching:
5. Designated Survivor (ABC)
Designated Survivor was the surprise drama of last year. With the current political state of America and plenty of political dramas already on air, Designated Survivor surpassed all expectations. That is in part to Kiefer Sutherland, who dominated the screen in every scene. Sutherland’s Tom Kirkland becomes the President after terrorists bomb the State of the Union Address, killing everyone above him in the line of succession. With the help of FBI Agent Hannah Wells (Maggie Q) and his cabinet, Tom has to figure out who the terrorists are and whether or not he can trust the survivors of the worst attack on American soil since 9/11. The show is eery and it’ll be interesting to see how things progress with Tom’s presidency in season two.
4. Scandal (ABC)
After six crazy and twisting seasons, Scandal is heading into its seventh and final season. The season six finale ended with a whirlwind of revelations and deception. In the end, Luna Vargas (Tessie Santiago) had her husband killed and then wanted Mellie (Bellamy Young) dead so she could rise to power. Her power-hungry tendencies got her “murdered” by Olivia (Kerry Washington) and Jake (Scott Foley) as they forced her to take pills so her death looked like a suicide. Happy ending there? Never in Shondaland. Season seven will pick up where Olivia is head of B613, Mellie is a president without a VP and Quinn (Katie Lowes) is pregnant. Scandal’s season seven is sure to be it’s most dramatic, yet memorable, season to date.
3. Stranger Things (Netflix)
It is time to head back to the Upside Down as Stranger Things returns to Netflix for season two. Just because Will (Noah Schnapp) is no longer trapped in the demon world that is the Upside Down doesn’t mean the boys of Hawkins are done with their adventure. As Will battles to be back in the “normal world,” Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo), Lucas (Caleb McLaughlin), and Mike (Finn Wolfhard) are there to make sure they don’t lose their buddy again. However, the best part of the new season isn’t learning how the love triangle of Nancy (Natalia Dyer), Steve (Joe Keery), and Jonathan (Charlie Heaton) ends up, it’s learning what happened to Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown).
2. Riverdale (The CW)
Riverdale is the new teen drama that is not just for the teens. Based off of the Archie Comics, The CW introduced the world to the dark and twisty town that is Riverdale. Fans were glued to season one to not only learn who killed Jason Blossom (Trevor Stines), but also to see the relationships unfold between Archie (K.J. Apa), Veronica (Camila Mendes), Betty (Lili Reinhart), and Jughead (Cole Sprouse). Many ships were made in season one like Bughead and Varchie, but will they last in season two? Riverdale is about to get darker than ever before after the season one finale ended with Archie’s dad Fred (Luke Perry) getting shot. While Riverdale is a city no one should strive to live in, it’s one we just can’t escape.
1. This Is Us (NBC)
This Is Us was the show that made America feel something. Barely into its freshman season, the show was already renewed for more. This Is Us is the new take on a family drama as it centers around the Pearsons. Instead of focusing on the present, fans get a glimpse of the past. We not only get to watch Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca’s (Mandy Moore) children, Kevin (Justin Hartley), Kate (Chrissy Metz), and Randall (Sterling K. Brown), grow into their adulthood, but also get to piece together the mystery that surrounds Jack’s death. This Is Us gave America a new family to be a part of. Season two is sure to bring just as many tears and even more love than what America endured through season one.
