If you’re like me and catching up with all the social feeds of the cast of Disney Channel’s Andi Mack, you’ll know that season 2 is currently in production. We. Can’t. WAIT! There were so many cliffhangers in season one that we’re counting the days until next season premieres. Sure, there are small teasers here and there, but it’s not enough.
In the meantime, we had the amazing chance to chat with one of the stars of the show, Joshua Rush, who plays Cyrus Goodman, AKA one of Andi’s best friends. Keep on reading to learn more about Joshua’s background, what he teased for season 2 and what he’d like to see Cyrus do by the time high school comes around! Here’s to us crossing our fingers we’ll see Andi Mack and the cast at that point of their life!
The Young Folks: For our readers who know you as Cyrus or even the voice of Bunga, can you tell us how you got your first start in acting/voice acting? What drew you to this career path?
Joshua Rush: I originally started around age 4 in modeling because my mom noticed I loved to be in front of the camera. Eventually in Houston, where we lived at the time, we moved into the theatrical space and later after moving to LA, I got into voice acting. VO is such a different beast and required me to learn a lot of brand new skills, so it was a lot of fun to teach myself some new tricks!
What’s the earliest memory you have of seeing yourself on TV or on some kind of platform and what was that like for you?
The earliest memory I have was seeing myself on the ONE billboard that my first print campaign went on to! We drove way out to the outskirts of Houston to see it! It was me on a billboard wearing a suit.
Before signing on with Disney, what was your favorite Disney Channel show you used to watch?
I loved watching Sonny With A Chance! It was basically a kid’s version of 30 Rock which is one of my favorite shows ever, and I feel like to a certain extent, Sonny With A Chance brought me to 30 Rock.
You have so many great roles under your belt, what has been your most memorable role to date and why?
I loved shooting Parental Guidance. Working with Billy Crystal and Bette Midler is an experience I couldn’t have gotten anywhere and I loved it.
What’s your thought process or method when you’re given a voice acting role? How do you remind yourself of possibly running into the problem of sounding like a previous character you voiced for?
First for me is creating a brand new voice. I try to come up with them from scratch, but sometimes tweaking an old voice works too. Some of my characters do sound similar, but it’s tough to notice because each has a different personality, context, and small tweaks.
With season two of Andi Mack picked up, what can you tease for the upcoming season?
I can tell you there will be more surprises, more revelations, and more baby taters!

What parts of Joshua did you bring into Cyrus?
I think Terri brought a lot of Joshua into Cyrus. For example, in the dance party episode when Cyrus runs into a glass wall, that’s something I did.
We haven’t gotten much of a background focus on Buffy and Cyrus. If it were up to you, what would you like Cyrus’ backstory to be like?
Here’s what we know: Cyrus has two parents and two step-parents. They’re all Jewish and they’re all therapists. I’d love to see some backstory on how this affected Cyrus and I’d love to see his parents’ personalities.
Looking into the future, what would you like to see Cyrus doing in high school?
I can’t wait to see Cyrus coming into his own.
I also read in a previous interview that you would also like to have a career in politics. Have you thought of what role you’d like to have? Maybe even a possible campaign slogan?
I’ve had a lot of existential crises recently and for me it’s either going to be Politics, Film, or Communications. But if I did run, I hope you’d be RUSHing to the polls!

What has to be your favorite Apple product so far? And your favorite app to use?
I suppose my favorite Apple product would be the iPhone. No other product is so deeply entrenched in our lives. I’m a pretty boring guy, so my top three apps are my texts, ESPN, and News.
