For Your Consideration: We Bare Bears

This week’s edition of “For Your Consideration” features the adorable Cartoon Network show, We Bare Bears. Created by Annie Award-winner Daniel Chong, the show premiered on Cartoon Network on July 27, 2015 and is about the lives of three bear brothers, Grizzly, Panda, and Ice Bear. The show follows their adventures as they integrate their lives into the San Francisco Bay Area’s hipster and modern community. Compared to typical cartoon shows, where each episode runs at about 30 minutes, a We Bare Bears episode runs at about 15 minutes each. Though the episodes are short, the animation, writing, and plot are very entertaining, concise and utterly adorable. We Bare Bears continues to attract a wide fan base with their timely topics and clever jokes and it baffles me why more people aren’t talking about this show.

The Premise

The show stars Grizzly (voiced by Eric Edelstein), Panda (voiced by Bobby Moynihan) and Ice Bear (voiced by Demetri Martin). They go on all sorts of adventures as they navigate their lives in the San Francisco Bay Area. From realizing how reusable tote bags are a way of life in the Bay Area, to trying to find love in the big city, the brothers face it all. The show also shares flashbacks into their past as the brothers try and get adopted. But in the end, they realized it was more important to stay together than to be adopted separately. (But seriously, the episodes where you see the brothers as babies is seriously too adorable for words.) Their unique bond is truly unmatched because these bears would do anything for each other.

As the modern world of selfies, jean jackets and trendy food places take over, We Bare Bears continues to make sure that each episode hits close to home. As the show progresses, we see the brothers face various obstacles that are not only relatable to folks in the San Francisco Bay Area, but also to the modern world at large. We get to watch the bears navigate the world, one “bear-stack” at a time.

Why You Should Watch

As an animated show that is about three adorable bears, it may seem like the series is more suitable for a younger audience, however, the show has something for everyone. Whether you live in the Bay Area and you find the topics relatable or you’re a fan of comedy or animated shows, you too will easily get hooked on this show. The writing is so good and every episode leaves me laughing (or heart-wrenched if the baby bears are in that particular episode). Speaking of clever writing, I found myself quoting SCENES, not just line, but scenes of the show and that is how good the writing on the show is. Each episode is only 15 minutes long so watching an episode (or two) won’t take too much time and it’ll give you a sense as to what the show is all about. I have raved about this show to a ton of my family and friends because anyone can be a We Bare Bears fan.
