Whether you believe it or not, Heroes & FanFest is really back for another year in San Jose! Naturally, coming back to where it all started. We can hardly contain our excitement, to be honest. Two of the TYF staff will be attending to make sure we’re giving you all the goods via social media. Don’t worry. We’ll make sure we don’t miss a thing!
While we countdown the hours until HVFF actually opens their doors, we thought right now would be a good time to let you know how to prep for HVFF San Jose. Whether it be your first time or your third time, it doesn’t hurt to brush up to make sure you cover all your bases. In fact, these tips could help literally anyone attending HVFF – it doesn’t have to be just San Jose! Look, this is a mini-comic con and one of the best ones at that. You get to be inches away from some of your favorite stars and that’s way better than queuing days ahead to land a spot in Hall H… So, let’s dive into some of our helpful tips!
Grab a Cup of Joe
No, we don’t mean grab your friend Joe, but hey, he may be important too. But if you’re a coffee lover, then don’t forget to make some time in the morning to make yourself a cup of coffee. Convention days tend to be very long and of course, fun. You find yourself waiting in long lines and in the case of FOMO, you want to be at the convention from the beginning until the end, which means maybe even grabbing a second cup of coffee to get that caffeine kick in the afternoon.
Bring a Comic Book
As Heroes and Villains FanFest is a festival centered around our favorite superheroes and villains, why not bring a couple of comic books to pass the time. There will be some downtime while you’re waiting for your highly anticipated panel to start or when you’re waiting to get your photo taken with your favorite celebrity, so kill some time the pop culture nerd way by bringing a comic book. Comic books won’t weigh down your bag, they’re thin so you’ll still have a ton of room for all the goodies you’ll probably buy from the vendors who will be at the convention and let’s not forget, comic books are also pretty damn entertaining.
Pack a Light Jacket
After going to a number of different conferences and conventions, the common theme tends to be that some rooms tend to be a little chilly. For our warm-blooded folks, this tip may not help you as much but for the others, don’t let this thought slip your mind. You want to enjoy yourself at the conference without freezing your butt off.
Don’t Forget ‘Em External Batteries
There’s nothing worse than realizing your phone battery is low and you want to record your favorite panel or tweet out a funny quote your favorite celebrity said. As one who likes to be super prepared, I like to bring an external battery or two to any convention I go to. External batteries save you the hassle and stress of trying to find a free phone outlet because we all know that convention centers rarely have enough power outlets for everyone.
Bring Those Dolla Dolla Bills
As a millennial, I hate to admit it, but I rarely carry cash nowadays. I usually like to ask “but do you have Venmo?” But don’t rely on the convenience of Square because not all vendors or booths will have Square as an option of payment and also, the ATMs at convention centers like to charge a fee so it’s best to not rely on those either. Instead, make a quick trip to your bank before heading to the event and withdraw enough cash for the day. When you’re withdrawing cash, don’t forget to take into account the merchandise you may want to buy, last minute photo opportunities you may want to purchase and of course, you need some money for food.
Comfortable Shoes + A Comfortable Extra Layer
Say what? Trust us when we say you’ll be waiting in wrapped lines before you get to land a seat at a panel. Not to mention, these lines start forming during the panel before the one you want to see. This means it’s going to take a while and why we say bring a comfortable extra layer… to sit on. The floor is not comfortable and whether you want to sit or lie down, it’s totally up to you, but you’ll want something comfortable!

Expect Anything and Everything
This really just goes for John Barrowman, who is known to be a prankster and an all around fun guy. Keep your eyes peeled on the floor when you’re going through the vendors. John Barrowman just might be using one of the big structures to show off the big kid he really is and whom we aspire to be like.
