NYCC 2012: Mankind: The Story of All of Us

At Comic Con, there was a official from the History Channel who spoke about History’s newest project, Mankind: The Story of All of Us.

The spokesperson stated, “It’s a six part series that covers the history of the human race. Basically anything historical that changed our faith and life- anything like the discovery of fire, using steel tools, weapons, farming, the printing press, to even atomic bombs and anything in history. To go along with the program, we’re doing a print novel , ibooks, ebooks, and a graphic novel- all that will be out in November. The same company that is doing this is the one that started America: A History of Us.

At the History Channel website, the series will be a 12 hour event following the formation and history of the human species.  It reflects upon the effects of humans from region to region and the growth of humans as a race. The series will cover everything from the ice age, farming, the rise and fall of the Roman and the Aztec Empire, the New World, the Industrial Revolution, and more- and it will be sure to put an emphasis on how we remarkably survived. And, I quote, it, “is the first television series in a generation to tackle the history of the human race… it features jaw-dropping imagery and dramatic reconstructions of the most critical events in human history.”

The comic books they handed out were quite interesting actually- they basically outlined my AP World textbook in a rather interesting way. I do somewhat feel that the idea to use comic books and other types of new technology is in fact a positive new way to reach younger people about history- but I do feel that some kids will start to get quite bored with it (in that psychological placebo effect) once they realize that they are learning history. (Just look at Assassin’s Creed for example- a video game that many enjoy and are subconsciously learning about history as well).

The series airs on Tuesday, November 13th at 9 pm. Don’t forget to go to their website to check out some of the videos and sneak peeks they have for the up-coming series. Also, the comic books will also be released by Silver Dragon Books, so be sure to check back often for the release as well.

And here’s a sneak peek at one of their new episodes:
