It was a very sad moment in my life when on February 10th 2006 Arrested Development finished its iconic run. I knew that I would never find another show like it again. Even though you can still see remnants of the show’s special brand of comedy in today’s hit shows, it wasn’t enough to heal the banana stand-sized hole in my heart. But after 7 long years, the cult-hit show is back.
It seems almost inconceivable, for years fans have been hearing rumors and whispers about the return of the canceled show. From movies to web shows, it seems like Arrested Development was going to reincarnate in every single media outlet around, but nothing ever came to fruition. Until finally in 2011 at The New Yorker Festival, the cast of Arrested Development announced that there was not only going to be a movie but also a brand new season of the show.
Taste the happy, people. After so many online petitions and prayers to the comedy gods, our wishes have been granted. Be mindful though, if you think that this new season is going to be like the other three. The team behind Arrested Development has decided to go on a different route this time. Each episode will focus on a different character instead of the old way of each episode focusing of all of the family member’s antics. Star Jason Bateman (Michael Bluth) and Creator/Executive Producer Mitch Hurwitz explained how the new season worked out the way it did, during a Television Critics Association winter press tour this past Wednesday, Hurwitz said this about the new format. “Our family had drifted apart, the only way we could get together was to dedicate each episode to a different character’s point of view. That became really fun because we’d find that some of the stories intersect. It’s kind of an evolution of the storytelling that was necessary.”
Bateman added to the statement by saying, “It is not ‘season four’; we should probably make that clear. Everybody sort of intermingles through each person’s individual episode, but it is a ‘Lindsay’ episode or a ‘Gob’ episode that we guest star in.”
As for the Arrested Development movie? Hurwitz states that this new season is just the first step, “This is the first act of what we would like to complete in a movie, these are episodes that set that up. One does not work without the other.”
The filming for all 14 episodes of the new season has wrapped up, and will premiere all at once on Netflix on May 4th
