Everything that is good in life comes in pairs. From pudding packs to popsicles, our western society has drilled it into our heads that two is better than one. For the most part, I agree, I mean who doesn’t love those pudding packs? While there are some exceptions to the rule, when it comes to the world of Sci-Fi, two is most definitely better than one. So I’ve compiled a list of the top 10 Sci-Fi/Supernatural/Fantasy duos in television. These dynamic duos have in some cases been friends, lovers, or just fellow schemers. Whatever the case may be that brought them together they all add that little extra something to our favorite shows and we thank them kindly for that.

10. Norville “Shaggy” Rogers and Scoobert “Scooby” Doo (Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated, Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!,A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, etc. etc.)
No this isn’t some trick, while it is true that 99.8% the villains Mystery Inc. helps catch are just everyday Joe Schmoes, there have been a few films (both animated and live-action) where the villain was a true supernatural being. Therefore they are eligible for the list, which is a good thing too. This pairing of a boy and his talking dog have been providing entertainment for generations of children since 1969. Their friendship has been the heart of the show since the very beginning. While their relationship may seem a bit codependent, there’s no denying that when they get together no villain has a chance against them.

9. Oliver Queen and John Diggle (Arrow)

It is hard being a vigilante superhero (just ask Batman). So for Oliver Queen’s bow toting alter-ego, Arrow, it’s nice to have some help. Who better to help you with your quest on bringing justice to your city than your faithful employee (again, just ask Batman). Although the road to their partnership has been more than a little rocky and still continues to have some setbacks, their commitment to helping Starling City earns them a spot on this list.

8. The Evil Queen/Regina Mills and Rumpelstiltskin/ Mr. Gold (Once Upon a Time)

Things aren’t always a fairytale in the town of Storybrooke, with an evil queen masquerading as the town’s mayor and a notorious trickster parading as pawnshop owner it’s surprising that the town is still functional. Gold and Mills (Or Rump and EQ) have more ties interwoven between them than Sirius Black’s family tree. Their characters go through so many story arcs that It’s confusing to figure out if these two are allies or enemies. As one fan rightly pointed out, “They argue like an old-married couple, but play against one another like siblings. I love it!” Don’t we all?

7. Eric Northman and Pamela Swynford De Beaufort (True Blood)

In the world of True Blood there’s no bond more powerful than the one between a maker and their child. While audiences were treated to some bad maker/child bonds (Bill/Lorena) and some great maker/child bonds (Godric/Eric), Eric and Pam’s bond takes the cake. Their bond is filled with years of love and devotion to each other, they’re both willing to do anything for each other. Whenever True Blood’s plots veered off to the ridiculous, Eric and Pam’s bond was the one constant for fans. They brought the comedy relief, and drama to the supernatural thriller. Although Eric released Pam from their bond, it’s clear that they will always have each others’ back.

6. Rick Grimes and Daryl Dixon (The Walking Dead)
Every general needs a second-in-command. When you’re fighting a lifelong war against zombies and one-eyed tyrants it’s good to have an lieutenant than can kick some serious zombie ass. In a world where 90% of its inhabitants are trying to eat your face, you end up becoming pretty close to the people who are not trying to gnaw at your legs. Rick was wary of the Daryl at first but after spending time together (and witnessing the hundreds of arrows sticking out of zombie heads) it was clear that a partnership between the two was a darn good idea. With their combined skill, I’d say that that have a pretty good chance of surviving the apocalypse

5. Curtis Donovan and Rudy Wade (Misfits)
Joseph Gilgun’s Rudy Wade was brought on in season three of the UK’s hit show to replace fan-favorite Nathan (Robert Sheehan) and from the start he brought a brand of crude humor that he effortlessly pulled off in a way that made him seem charming to fans of the show. He quickly became close to Curtis, in fact Curtis’s last words were to Rudy. There was always something endearing about Rudy and Curtis’s relationship. They were complete opposites of each other. Together they made an almost comical duo, a modern day odd couple. Despite of the fact Misfits seems to be a sinking ship, I’ll always have a lifeboat in my heart for a Rudy/Curtis spin-off. Hey, when it comes to show about kids and superpowers, bringing someone back to life isn’t the most implausible thing, it has already happened once before.

4. Tyrion Lannister and Ser Bronn of the Blackwater (Game Of Thrones)
As discussed earlier sometimes your employees can end up being your greatest allies. That’s certainty the case for the wise-cracking youngest son of House Lannister and the fan-favorite sellsword. Tyrion’s brain and Bronn’s brawn melded together perfectly to create a Westerosi version of Freak the Mighty. Together the pair saved King’s Landing from becoming R’Hllor’s playground. Even though their coming together is based on gold, the pair can still admit that they’re friends, at least until Casterly Rock runs out of gold.

3. Arthur Pendragon and Merlin (Merlin)
When someone is fighting to unite kingdoms and become king it’s always a good idea to have a warlock by your side (Westeros, take note). The story of Arthur and Merlin is legendary and has been told countless times in various forms of media. The most famous portrayals have Merlin being much older than Arthur. BBC’s Merlin chose to have Merlin and Arthur be young adults. Throughout the series’ run the pair became extremely close friends. Even in death there’s a sense of love and loyalty with the two. After watching his best friend die in his arms, Merlin still awaits the day that Arthur will rise again, if that isn’t friendship, then I don’t know what is.

2. Dean Winchester and Sam Winchester (Supernatural)
If you listen closely, you can hear the rage of many fan-girls over the fact that Sam and Dean are not number one. Sam and Dean Winchester are the poster children of codependency. They’re the example of what would happen to Shaggy and Scooby if they were allowed to grow up. For most of their lives they’ve only had each other, that created a bond between the pair that not even a couple trips to hell could break. Together they take down all the things that go bump in the night while also saving the world a time or two. Like any other siblings they are prone to their spats, buts it’s undeniable how much they love and respect other-even if it is unhealthy. Just ask any fan-girl about “wincest”.

1. The Doctor and the Companion. (Doctor Who)
If you couldn’t guess who was number one just by reading the title then I suggest turning in your nerd card now. For 50 years the Doctor and his faithful companion have traveled through time and space and battled various space baddies to keep the universe in order. When the show first began the companion was meant to to be a teacher and guide of Earth and its customs for the alien Time Lord. As time passed the role changed and the companion became a valuable asset to the Doctor in helping fight the numerous villains that appear on the show. There’s such as a deep love and understanding when it comes to the Doctor and his companions. Here is a being that has no one else except for his companions.; his home planet is destroyed and he is the last of his kind. He depends on these people to be his comfort and his support group, just as they depend on him with their lives. At the same time, he knows that it’s impossible to get too close to whoever he’s bonded with and he’s virtually destined to walk the universe (and time stream) alone. No matter what the reincarnation the doctor is in or which companion he has with, there is always something so heartbreakingly beautiful about this relationship.
