While the two of AMC’s heavy hitters (Breaking Bad and Mad Men) are slowly coming to a close, it seems that the same can not be said for AMC’s post-apocalyptic, zombie spectacular. The Walking Dead is one of AMC’s biggest shows and if you ask AMC’s CEO, Josh Sapan, there are zero plans on ending the show anytime soon. The Hollywood Reporter states that at the recent Barclays Global Technology, Media and Telecommunications Conference the CEO had this to say about the cult-hit zombie show:
“We hope that zombies live forever and we’ve just begun to find out what the post-apocalyptic world is like, so that we’ll be sitting here at the Barclays conference in 2022 discussing the fact that ‘Walking Dead’ is not over.”
Saying that the show could continue on to 2022 is a bit of a stretch, but with the ratings the show is steadily reeling in, it’s fair to say that this show will be going on for quite a while. The creator of the comic that inspired the series, Robert Kirkman, has a ton of material to work from and continues to produce new comics.
It’d be interesting to see how the zombie apocalypse effects the group in a couple years. Will the years harden the group and make it easier to navigate the strange new world? Or will the ongoing years break down the group’s already fragile psyche and cause the complete breakdown of Rick “The Dictator” Grimes? Watching Rick raise baby Judith to (hopefully) adulthood would be an fascinating experiment. What happens when it’s time for her to go to school or when she reaches puberty? Suffice to say there are many things for Rick to do story wise.
Whether this show ends in a few years or 10, it’s been a wild ride. Should the writers ever stall on a story line, they should remember this cardinal rule: Zombies+Daryl Dixon= happy audiences.
