Caught Up with Madison Davenport, ‘Kate Fuller’ on ‘From Dusk Till Dawn’

If you haven’t been keeping up with “From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series,” then you’ve missed out on the emergence of the Fuller family and their unusual road trip, in which we meet “Kate” played by Madison Davenport.

After the passing of Kate’s mother, her father decides to pack up all their belongings into an RV and head straight to the border “for a vacation” not knowing the fate that lies ahead. Kate discovers a few secrets about her father and they aren’t pleasant.

Recently I had a delightful phone chat with Madison Davenport right before her New York movie premiere for “Noah” which hits theaters this Friday, starring Russell Crowe, where she plays Na’el, the love interest of Noah’s son.

ZG: Tell me a little bit about your character Kate.

MD: Okay, so my character Kate is… the reason I got into her is because she’s just a regular girl, you know, and that’s what’s so great about her. She thinks it’s weird that her dad is suddenly picking up their lives and uprooting them and taking them on a trip to Mexico for no apparent reason. Even though she’s sweet and she loves her dad, and she’s innocent, she still knows that something is up. She’s not stupid and she’s gonna get to the bottom of it even if it makes her dad angry. I do think that as you watch the show you’re gonna see such a character development, such an arc, and that’s why I really fell in love with my character. I loved her in the beginning but I kept finding little nuances of the character that I  didn’t see before and I just kept realizing as we were filming and it’s such a great arc as you go along. I didn’t see it coming when I read the scripts that revealed something huge about Kate and her family. I literally screamed, it blew my mind. And that’s how all this goes down.  You read one and then you’re like ‘What’s gonna happen next? I have to know!’

ZG: What I got to see from the first two episodes, Kate’s father lost his faith so he’s taking you away [on a road trip], do you think Kate will lose her faith too?

MD: Um… you’ll just have to wait and see. (Giggles) I think… it will be interesting for you to see… how differently two people from the same family can handle situations. Where someone depended on faith their whole life might turn away from god, other people might go to him.

ZG: Oh…

MD: Yeah, you’re just gonna have to wait and see.

ZG: We saw what happened to Kyle…

MD: Cherry Lime

ZG: Ha ha, yes, Chery Lime, will we see him again?

MD: I don’t know if you saw him in the back of the truck, but I don’t think there’s much hope for Kyle.

ZG: Okay, just making sure. What can you tell me about your scenes with DJ and Zane?

MD: I can tell you they were tension filled. We actually made it a point not to know each other until we started filming all of our scenes together. The first time we really actually got to know each other was when we filmed our first scene where they actually take us hostage. That was such an interesting approach because it did help add to that awkwardness of these people invading their space. You know, because that’s really what it is, it’s like an invasion of our family’s privacy and they pretty much use us. I think our scene, the Gecko brothers and the Fuller family are very interesting because you see such different worlds come together.

ZG: Okay, now in the promo we see you swimming in a pool of blood. Tell me about that scene.

MD: Woah, okay,  so I can’t tell you what happens before, but I will tell you this… I’ll tell you about the [day we shot]. It was such a fun day. They strapped this harness strapped to my back to keep me floating cuz I kept sinking in and then connected to the harness was this floaty-contraption that was connected to a tank filled with fake blood. They turned it on and got the crane shot. It was cool to watch. I kind of fell asleep while floating cuz that was the point, I’m suppose to be… not dead in the pool, but suppose to appear that way.

ZG: Is this one of [Richie’s] crazy visions?

MD: You’ll have to wait for the next episode, it’s the next episode. Episode four.

ZG: Okay, so it’s coming up.

MD: It’s actually really cool, if you don’t know exactly what it is, it’s so cool.

ZG: No I don’t. I’m actually watching the third episode, so I know that “your dad” might have a drinking problem

MD: Yeah, he’s been sober for years, and years, because obviously he’s a pastor. A man of the cross stays away from drinking and so I think the stresses of what he’s dealing with…

ZG: Drives him back…

MD: Are definitely coming back, yeah are driving him back to whatever he needed in the first place.

ZG: What can you tease us for future episodes? Are you done filming?

MD: We are done filming. And we just found out, The Hollywood Reporter just announced that we got picked up for a second season for thirteen episodes.

ZG: Oh that’s so awesome!!

MD: Awesome!

ZG: Yeah!

MD: I know! I’m so excited! We have a group text going on right now. It’s all of us, Wilmer[Valderama], DJ [Cotrona], Me,  Zane [Holtz], Brandon[Soo Hoo], and Robert Patrick, and we’re like YAY!

ZG: That is so great. Congratulations on that.

MD: We’re very excited and it’s so cool because this season obviously is taking place during the movie. Next season is gonna be after the movie. Everything you don’t ever get to see. And I think it’s gonna be really interesting because this season definitely leaves you with a really good cliffhanger. Well, anyway great talking to you I’m sure we’ll talk again

ZG: Good luck tonight, and great talking to you.

MD: Thank you! Bye.

ZG: Bye.

Looks like we’ll be seeing a lot more from Madison Davenport as “Kate” since the show has been picked up for it’s second season after only three episodes being aired. It has also been picked up by Netflix and is now being distributed internationally. Filming will take place in Austin, Texas at Robert Rodriguez Troublemaker studios. Don’t forget to watch Tuesday’s at 9pm on El Rey Network.
