An Inside Look at “POWERS” – PlayStation Exclusive Series

Sony’s PlayStation Network for subscribed fans of the platform is taking it’s placement on the “streaming-only series” train.

Game consoles have been on a long stretch of legitimizing themselves as multimedia machines, and in our era of Netflix, online streaming entertainment has brought forth potentially great things. From the gaming world, we’ve seen Xbox One release Halo: Nightfall, a series based on Bungie/343’s modern sci fi classic produced by Showtime and Stephen Spielberg of all people, and even Nintendo has made its first foray into animation in years with Shigeru Miyamoto’s Pikmin short films.  Sony’s PlayStation is taking its hand at giving console owners their own, exclusive series, but this one’s a bit different.

The Playstation original series, “Powers” is an edgy, action/drama season reminiscent of Watchmen in it’s portrayal of superheroes that aren’t all too heroic in the traditional sense. The show is based on a comic series of the same name which began its run in 2000 by acclaimed writer Brian Michael Bendis, who is responsible for writing plenty of outstanding Marvel Comics runs such as Ultimate Spider-Man, House of M and Age of Ultron.

The series adapts the comic’s story of ordinary people with superhuman abilities in the city of Los Angeles, but using them in a believable manner in our world of chasing fame, fortune and 24 hour news exposure. Therefore, those in “Powers” who are gifted, generally use them for selfish reasons. The story generally revolves around one man, played by Sharlto Copley (District 9, Chappie) who lost his own abilities, and is now working as a homicide detective while coping with being merely human once again.

“Powers” releases on March 10th, exclusively on the PlayStation Network, a subscription service accessible through PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 and PS Vita. PSN is a mere $10 a month, and not only allows viewers access to more Sony exclusive series to come, but a massive wealth of online playability, and monthly, free downloads of independent and AAA title games.

With the release of “Powers”, Sony and PlayStation Network will likely bring forth even more series intended for PSN viewers, and will only further benefit projects like the current production of the feature length film adaptation of Naughty Dog’s critically acclaimed game of 2013, The Last of Us, and plenty of future projects down the line.

Leading up to the release of “Powers”, PlayStation has released An Inside Look at the making of the series.
