WATCH: MTV’s ‘SCREAM’ TV Series Trailer

3g1MIjYgTonight’s MTV Movie Awards gave us a sneak peek at their upcoming Scream TV series, based on the iconic horror franchise of the same name from the minds of Kevin Williamson and Wes Craven. The movies were campy, self-aware horror at its finest, turning aspects of the genre on its head in order to make a commentary on it. One of the best aspects of the franchise was that you followed the indomitable victims rather than the same serial killer. All seven killers were connected by the use of the Scream mask and of course, an obsession with terrorizing Sidney Prescott (Neve Campbell).

When MTV announced the TV series last summer, they made it clear from the beginning that this was no longer the story of Sidney, Dewey Riley (David Arquette), and Gale Weathers (Courteney Cox). Also missing from the tv show will be the iconic mask, which leads me to ask: why are we calling this Scream?

“You can’t do a slasher movie as a tv series,” the preview says, saying what we’re all beginning to think after seeing this preview. “Slasher movies burn bright and fast. By the time the first body is found, it’s only a matter of time before the bloodbath commences.” It looks like the show is going to be chock full of MTV-style teen angst—let’s just hope it has the gore to match.

Watch the preview here:

From what I can tell, the series is going to be closer to Eye Candy than Scream. Which, once again, begs the question: WHY is this being called Scream? Honestly.

Scream premieres on MTV June 30, 2015.
