After Cory’s class is taken over by current events, Maya perfectly sums up my feelings on news media: “Stuff happened in some country, some team won a game, and it’s cold somewhere with a chance of I don’t care.” The kids’ apathy comes from their inability to vote—why should they care about a world they can’t do anything to change? Enter Eric, who breathlessly explains that he’s running for New York Senator and needs their votes.
Eric was recruited by the Whispering Man in the Bowtie to take down the corrupt incumbent Davis Graham in the primaries. He asks Riley and her friends to be his campaign team. TJ Murphy, café rando and siterunner of Thorn in My Side, explains that Graham took money from schools in order to give it to his wealthy friends. He was the one who caught him and broke the story.
Graham and the Whispering Bow Tie Man walk into Topanga’s café, sizing up their old rival. Apparently Topanga’s law firm went against Graham in his quest to charge admission to free state parks. His platform is all about making money for the state. Question: why isn’t Topanga going into politics? Topanga is the leader we deserve! The gang realizes that the Whispering Bow Tie Man works for Graham and recruited Eric in order to make Graham look better in the eyes of the public again, throwing Eric into a depression.
Riley and Maya lure Eric out of bed with a giant bowl of cocoa puffs, hoping that Eric will be the person to help them change the world. He makes his appearance at the senatorial debate (taking place at John Quincy Adams Middle School, of course), where Harley gives us our first question: “What are you gonna do for the little guy?” Graham blows off the question—who cares about kids! They can’t even vote! He refutes Eric’s claim about caring for kids’ interests, claiming that since he’s not a parent, he can’t care about them. TJ stands up and reveals himself as Tommy, the little boy in Boy Meets World that Eric used to hang out with. Eric wanted to adopt him, but ultimately gave Tommy up to a stable family to make sure he had a good life. The audience videos their hug and Tommy asks to be hired on Eric’s staff.
While we don’t find out what happened in the primaries, we do see Cory and Topanga packing to go on a long vacation—apparently they’re not thrilled with the idea that Eric stands a real chance.
Boy Meets World Throwback Factor: HIGH! We have another appearance from Eric, one where he eats a giant bowl of cocoa puffs, just like the time he decided to be Eric Matthews, Good Looking Detective. We also got an appearance from Tommy, who came with his very own Boy Meets World montage!
