August Binge Watch: The Top 10 Shows You Should Be Watching

[tps_header]August 2015: The Binge Watch[/tps_header]

Ah, the hottest month of the year. The month where children are being hustled back into school doors, while the other (luckier) kids cling to their bed sheets and binge watch Netflix until their eyes bleed (me); however, for those of us who go to college, it’s not like we don’t have the luxury of
Netlflix. We just use it as an excuse…mostly. Sure, we’d (sometimes) like to go back to the olden days where all our friends were in one place, the teachers yelled at you to do your homework, and making an A was the easiest thing you ever had to do, and Netflix didn’t make you feel sad about the fact that you’re avoiding writing a ten page paper.

I know, I know, it’s only the end of July, and I should probably wait to make this post, but before you know it, September will have crept up on us and slipped through the crack in the door and scared us into a blood-curdling scream.

Well, sort of.

So as it approaches quickly (yes, September is only six weeks away), I figured it’s never too soon to break out the box set of “I never want to leave this bed, wait school starts in like a week, but I only have one season left???” shows to dive into before the alarm is blaring and you’re crying into some coffee.

Let us begin.

10. Queer As Folk, USA, Showtime

Available on Netflix, On Demand, and DVD.

I was but a wee little child when this series hit Showtime, but I discovered its existence not too long ago, and last summer, well, I watched it in its entirety.

In a week.

I don’t recommend that in any form. No matter if you’ve slept your full prescribed eight hours and feel bright as a daisy.

I can recognize the opening sequence with my eyes closed. Go-go dancers never looked the same.

But really, the show has its extreme low moments (TED, I MEAN REALLY), and the ending is unsatisfactory, but it’s bawdy, iconic, and Gale Harold at his finest.

It’s worth the time you’ll spend on the couch eating your ice cream and asking yourself why Brian is just a bag of douche. Just the largest bag.

09. Scandal, ABC

Available on Netflix, On Demand, and DVD.

Oliviaaaaa Popppeeeeee.

I was super hesitant to watch Scandal, I must say. I heard really good things about it, but if I want to watch a TV show, I have to be hooked from the get-go.

Let me tell you, five minutes in and I was already kicking myself for not watching it sooner. Kerry Washington is superb in it, and she is everything I ever want to become. Except, not with politics. I’ll pass on that.

I used to say I wanted to be Meryl Streep from The Devil Wears Prada, but I have now come to the conclusion that I’d like to be Olivia Pope.

Even her last name is important.

You can consume this in a week. I approve of that decision.

08. Teen Wolf, MTV

Available on Amazon/Amazon Prime and on DVD.

You all already know I love Teen Wolf, and with the new season cleaning up its act little by little, I have to put this on the list.

Not only is this show super fun to watch, you also get to see the young actors grow and become better at their craft. The first two seasons are the best, with the exception of Season 3B (I will gas that season up till the day I die).

You’ll fall in love with the characters and be sad to see them go (cause they do…a lot), but this is overall a fun watch.

There are also four seasons for you to enjoy, so you should probably start now.

07. Orange Is the New Black, A Netflix Original

Available on Netflix.

Yes, I caved.

I’m still on the first season and slowly working my way up (this is one of my August binge watch), but it’s good. There’s a reason this show has been hyped up to its current standards, and while I haven’t given all of the three seasons a watch, I can tell I made the correct binge choice.

06. Sense8, A Netflix Original

Available on Netflix.

Where must we go to avoid all the debauchery?

No, really. I probably bite off more than I can chew these days with the shows I’m binge-watching currently, and I eventually added this to the list. I started out with the first episode a short while after it came out and then never finished it.

I came back to it not long after and I’m SO HERE for all the diverse characters and representation in this show. Don’t do what I did and ignore what this show that’s overflowing with what all other shows are lacking.

I recommend not watching it with your parents though. Unless you thrive off of awkward situations, in which I would tell you to go for it.

My friend watched this with her mom, and her mom ended up leaving the room.

It’s still a delicate situation.

05. Shameless, USA, Showtime

Available on Showtime on Demand or on DVD.

I tried to keep the shows strictly to places you can watch with a subscription, but alas, sometimes that just isn’t the case.

Case in point: Shameless is hilarious, witty, annoying, and gritty, with superb writing. I got hooked from the pilot and have since tried my hardest to keep up with every episode. There are a few I’m missing in between that I’ll just read up on, but I do plan to buy each season as I go to relive it all.

I think you all should do the same.

The highlight of the show for me is Mickey and Ian, but I have a soft spot for Lip.

CURSE YOU, GALLAGHERS.

04. Empire, FOX

Available on Hulu+, On Demand, and DVD.

Boo Boo Kitty.

When will Cookie emerge from the darkest pits of my summer and bring me life again?

I’ll be reviewing the upcoming second season, but let me tell you that the first season will have you itching for the new one IMMEDIATELY.

It’s a quick watch, mostly because it’s so entertaining you haven’t even realized forty minutes have passed, but also because it’s all around good writing and has strong development.

The music, the drama, the gif-worthy moments. It’s all tied together with a bow and presented to you in a season full to the brim of insanity.

It’s glorious and you will not regret clicking play.

There is a reason why millions and millions of people tuned in to see that finale. Also, the musical guests are phenomenal.

03. Game of Thrones, HBO

Available on HBO On Demand and DVD.

I KNOW.

I had to do it. There are still people that have not jumped on this bandwagon and I am not here for your excuses.

Okay, I know it’s not on Netflix, but really, you can watch it on Demand or buy the seasons at your local Target.

I’m done hearing your excuses; there is so much to catch up on. It will take you time, but it’s very worth it.

Also, dragons.

02. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, A Netflix Original

Available on Netflix.

It’s now Emmy nominated and it was co-birthed by Tina Fey.

Not exactly, but you get my point.

That intro title song should be the real selling point, but the whole show is fun and heartwarming and good.

There’s not much else to say other than the fact that it’s basically got five stars on Netflix.

Netflix watchers are harsh, so this should be a kick in the butt.

01. American Horror Story, FX

Available to watch on Demand, DVD, or Netflix.

Although the impeccable Jessica Lange will not be around for the next season, there are four other seasons to bask in her magnificent glow.

Ahem.

It’s the least magnificent, considering this show is downright scary at times, which, horror, but it’s also great story telling, and you don’t need to watch the show in chronological order of the seasons, because none of them have anything to do with each other.

Or do they?

I also really like Evan Peters.

But we won’t mention that.

The first three seasons of AHS is up on Netflix, but the fourth season is pending release (at least on Netflix).

In the meantime, you can buy all of the seasons on DVD or you can wait for it to hit Netflix.

Either way, WATCH ALL OF THEM…and then not get any sleep at any point for the next week even if you are not watching it because you will see latex guy everywhere.
