Interview: Shamier Anderson (Agent Dolls) from ‘Wynonna Earp’

Shamier Anderson

On Friday there was an interview with Shamier Anderson from Wynonna Earp. Shamier plays Agent Dolls on the show. He was a little under the weather, but he was more than willing to answer all the questions.

I’ve heard that actors sometimes have to do something special to get a role such as singing, dancing, etc. just to lighten the mood. Did you do anything special to get the role?

Shamier Anderson: No, nothing. I didn’t have to do any dancing or stuff like that. I read my scripts, I sleep and I watch movies. I’m pretty old school. I do the work, you know? I’m very conventional when it comes to getting jobs. I put my head in the book, focus and explore different strategies on how I’m going to play the character. The basics if I had to say.

In the very beginning of the season Dolls was very mechanical and didn’t show much emotion, but now he’s very expressive. Will that continue as the season progresses?

Anderson: 100%. With anybody communicating, especially individuals in law enforcement working on an investigation, I’ve learned recently this term called the ‘Fixed Face” that FBI agents go through and it’s something that you definitely have to do in the beginning, but as the season goes on and fingers crossed for future seasons, you’ll see more and more of Dolls expressing himself especially as he gets more comfortable with Wynonna and the towns folk. You’ll see more of his behavior come out and not just Agent Dolls.

In the last episode that just aired (episode 8) we saw at the end that Dolls had captured and was going to torture “Whiskey Jimmy”. Would you say that he’d do almost anything for Black Badge if they asked for it?

Anderson: Of course, it’s his job. It’s his livelihood and it’s for the bigger picture, so he needs to make sure that whatever he needs to do gets done. If that means getting a little dirty and doing a little torturing to sustain his title and position in Black Badge then Dolls will do it.

Since you say Dolls would do anything to reach his goals and he works with Doc who will do anything to reach his own goals, do you think he admires that about him?

Anderson: I don’t know if it’s an admiration. I think he still believes that Doc has something up his sleeve. He doesn’t really know what Doc is and what Doc is about yet and I definitely think he keeps an extra eye open when it comes to him.

Do think the two of them will ever be friends?

Anderson: I would say more allies and they’ll be more civil. I wouldn’t say friends, but I don’t think Agent Dolls has many friends to begin with. I think more allies or civil acquaintance would be the correct term.

Both characters work and care for Wynonna and there have been a few hits between Doc and her. Is there something going on there?

Anderson: Haha, a lot of people ask me that and the best way I can answer this without giving away too much is that Dolls has a really good poker face and he’s good at hiding his feelings, but close to the end of the season you may see him open up in a different way that he’s never opened up before, so look forward to that.

Speaking of opening up, there’s the episode where Dolls needs that drug to possibly keep something at bay. If Dolls is something else, do you think that would negatively affect the team?

Anderson: I actually can tell you and believe it or not Dolls is a mermaid. Haha, I’m just joking. He’s not a mermaid. To be honest with you, the best way I can explain it is to kind of look at it like Blade or Beast from X-Men, it’s just one of those things he has to control. It may be for a good reason or a bad reason, why he has to protect himself. I can’t say much about it, you’ll have to wait close to the season’s end.

On the subject of Dolls’ past we say that demon takes control of him in that previous episode. Do you think people or creature from Doll’s past will come to haunt him.

Anderson: Yeah, it’s definitely something that could be explored in possible future seasons. There’s not enough time for it in this season, but it’s definitely something I would like to see explored on the show.

As the season gets closer to the end how do you think he’s going to deal with Bobo and the Stone Witch. Does he have strategies in mind or would he just follow protocols?

Anderson: I think overall Purgatory is a whole other deal. Black Badge has dealt with a lot, especially with the Earp circle and the Earp heir. He’s dealing with a lot of new, not foreign, but new elements. It’s definitely going to be tricky dealing with Bobo, the Stone Witch and everything else in Purgatory, but he’ll definitely handle it.

My final question is what would you like to see more in a second season regarding not only your character, but the show as a whole?

Anderson: That’s a great question. One of the better questions I’ve had this week. To be honest, if it were up to me I would love to see more action! I love action and when I mean action, I mean from all the characters. I’d like to see Dolls and Doc fight a little more. I’d like to see Dolls kick some more butt. Some more shooting and shoot outs. I would love to see more of what Dolls can do. Also I would love to see Sheriff Neadley get into some action. It would be really cool to see his background. Some plot twists with supporting characters. That’s what I’d love to see. Possibly crossovers from other shows.
