SDCC ’16 News: Marvel’s The Defenders, Luke Cage and More

So Marvel fans. Here we are, once again in the throes of the annual San Diego Comic Con, where we’ve been on the receiving end of many BIG announcements and debuts. So why are we still surprised when the megawatt studio manages to outdo themselves once again?

From the streets of Hells Kitchen, we first got confirmation that Daredevil had been renewed for a third season, a smart choice considering the emotional upheaval the second had left us in. According to The Hollywood Reporter, after showcasing footage from the first two seasons of Daredevil and the first of Jessica Jones, Jeph Loeb went on to debut the first teaser footage of Luke Cage starring Mike Colter.

Colter was such an immediately charismatic persona on Jones that I can’t wait to see what he brings to the table as the focus of his own series. Bringing a slightly unrecognized superhero to the forefront has been something Netflix has excelled at thus far and I remain confident that they can manage the same with their latest venture. Worth noting is how the series seems to be taking from the Jessica Jones school of thought regarding fight scenes, with everything seemingly slower and looking weightless due to his super human strength, compared to every fight Daredevil finds himself in seems to be an out and out battle for survival. Luke Cage almost seems bored.

After a sabotaged experiment leaves him with super strength and unbreakable skin, Luke Cage (Mike Colter) becomes a fugitive who attempts to rebuild his life in modern day Harlem, New York City. But soon he is pulled out of the shadows and must fight a battle for the heart of his city – forcing him to confront a past he had tried to bury.

Iron Fist also received a first trailer and a confirmed 2017 release date. The video doesn’t show too much but does confirm at the very least an origin story for Danny Rand. Despite some beautiful looking shots for this one, I can’t help but find it difficult to muster up any real excitement for this one. Finn Jones never exactly popped off the screen in Game of Thrones, and it seems like a very big missed opportunity for Marvel to cast an Asian-American man as the lead. Time will tell on this one.

But that isn’t all Marvel and Netflix had ready to dole out. On top of that, Jones appeared in a video taped from the set of the new series in order to debut the first teaser of Marvel’s The Defenders. Sure, the teaser says very little, but it hints to why the build up of the mysterious big bad of Daredevil has taken such a tediously slow route – to give something to the four heroes to fight against. Also, the simple idea of these four personalities converging as a group is too exciting to stamper down.

I can’t believe we have to wait until 2017. All good things are worth waiting for?
