Dang, this show always gets complicated really quick.
The last we left off with the Legends of Tomorrow, we had several key players missing from the crew including resident Hawkpersons Kendra and Carter as well as the adored Captain Cold AKA Leonard Snart.
The more focused team of Captain Rip Hunter, Mick Rory, Sara Lance, Ray Palmer, Jax Jefferson and Prof. Martin Stein set off to write all the wrongs being committed throughout various pasts, presents, futures and timelines of various worlds, as they depart their first season having destroyed the Time Masters manipulation of destiny and fate of the universe for their own interests, as well as those of Vandal Savage. Now this group of heroes are left to sort everything out, and when season two beings they are literally nowhere to be found.
Enter time detective, Dr. Nate Haywood, who had been researching the legends and is surprised to find them disappeared, or untraceable from time after a certain appearance in 1942. As he provides a proper cameo from Star City Oliver Queen to find the crew that consisted of, essentially, half of his friends. The two end up finding Mick Rory inside of the Waverider vessel at the bottom of the Hudson river, where we realize this episode is in fact and in media res, where we’re told exactly how it is that the rest of the crew ended up stranded in time. The short conclusion to this was the acquisition of of a nuclear bomb by, what is assumed to be Nazis, in the heat of World War II. The fascinating thing about this piece of world building in the episode is that the team was instructed to never adjust something in the timeline within that year as it was such a massive tipping point for the planet Earth, and one would assume such a terrible deed was one gifted to the Third Reich by Vandal Savage. However, it turns out that we get a strong, villainous cameo from Neil McDonagh as Damien Darhk instead.
While most fans will likely be wondering about the whereabouts of Vandal Savage at this point in time, I do kind of like the concept of the team righting wrongs throughout the timeline as recompense for destroying the time masters, as it allows for a lot of variety in adventures for them throughout time and space. Another reason for this is that we’re re-establishing Damien Darhk, who was killed by Oliver Queen in the spring of 2016, as the murderer of Laurel Lance, the sister of Sara AKA the White Canary. The bloodthirst of vengeance driving her in an initial arc of this season, or even a handful of episodes can provide a face off with Darhk that we never got to see her execute in Arrow last season, and could ultimately come to a head in the crossover episodes before the mid-season break. Speaking of that mid-season break, an unstable timeline in control of the Legends could mean that Barry Allen’s The Flash may finally have the slightest of hope of restoring his fracture timeline to being whole once again if he were to reconnect with his old allies.
