We are only a couple of days away from the premiere of the final season of The Vampire Diaries and we are taking a look back at some of the most shocking, jaw-dropping moments that left viewers wanting more.

1. Vicki’s Death (1×07 Haunted)

THE CW

While death is nothing new to The Vampire Diaries now, it was shocking when the show drew first blood by killing off one of it’s main characters so early on in the first season. Vicki was the first character turned into a vampire by Damon, but her new immortal life was cut short when her blood-lust took control and she attacked Elena at the school’s Halloween party causing Stefan to make the difficult decision to stake her.

2. Elena and Damon’s First Dance (1×19 Miss Mystic Falls)

THE CW

When Stefan stood up Elena at the Miss Mystic Falls Pageant because of his blood-lust, Damon standing at the bottom of the steps waiting for Elena to walk down became the moment Delena shippers define as the start of their epic romance.

3. Katherine’s Grand Entrance (1×22 Founder’s Day)

THE CW

The most shocking moment in the entire series for me was the season one finale when Katherine made her grand entrance in Mystic Falls by pretending to be Elena, kissing Damon on her front porch and chopping off her Uncle John’s fingers with a kitchen knife. My thirteen year old self jumped out of my seat thinking how can they just end the season like that?

4. Caroline’s Transformation (2×01 The Return)

THE CW

When we were first introduced to Caroline, it was hard to imagine her surviving very long in the supernatural world considering her naivety and Damon using her as his personal human blood-bag. But when Katherine killed her in beginning of season two while she was in the hospital turning her into into a vampire, she quickly became one of the most bad-ass characters in the series.

5. Klaus Falls For Caroline (3×11 Our Town)

THE CW

When Klaus was first introduced during the end of season two as the main villain, no one expected that he would survive or develop into such a complex character. During “The Birthday” episode, Caroline is celebrating her eighteen birthday when werewolf Tyler, controlled by Klaus, fatally bites her. As Caroline laid dying, Klaus surprisingly shows up at her house and gives his own blood, saving her life. Revealing a much softer side to the ancient vampire and igniting the start of a new romance.

6. Elena’s Death and Rebirth (3×22 The Departed)

THE CW

The most heartbreaking season finale of The Vampire Diaries has to go to season three’s “The Departed.” While we had a suspicion that Elena was going to eventually turn into a vampire, it was still surprising because no knew that Damon had given her his blood prior to her car flying off the bridge and into the river where she drowned in order to save Matt’s life.

7. Elena and Damon’s First Kiss (3×10 The New Deal)

THE CW

It was the moment that Delena shippers had been waiting for, Damon finally admits his feelings for her an the two share their first kiss on Elena’s porch. While Elena seemed a bit surprised and didn’t react the way fans wanted to her, it was still a big moment for Damon’s character admitting that he shouldn’t have to feel sorry for loving her.

8. Haley’s Pregnancy Revealed (4×20 The Originals)

THE CW

One of the more exciting moments in the series was when Haley revealed to Klaus that she was carrying his child in “The Originals,” the backdoor pilot to spinoff series The Originals. It was a refreshing twist to see these supernatural characters face such human problems and the prospect of seeing Klaus as father was something that made The Originals so successful as a spinoff series.

9. Elena Chooses Damon (4×23 Graduation)

THE CW

It was the moment Delena fans jumped with jumped with joy around the world, Elena had finally chosen Damon at the end of “Graduation.” The romantic moment was ruined though when we found out that Elena’s feeling for Damon were magnified due to a sire bond that developed when she was turned. But the ship prevailed in the end when Elena admits that she always loved Damon and that the sire bond has nothing to do with their love for each other.

10. Alaric and Jo’s Red Wedding (6×21 I’ll Wed You in the Golden Summertime)

The CW

The Vampire Diaries met Games of Thrones at the end of season six during Alaric and Jo’s red wedding massacre. When Jo’s evil twin, Kai, appeared out of thin air killing her at the alter along with her unborn twins, and leaving Alaric heartbroken. Kai also knocked Elena out with a sleeping curse during the chaos, resulting in Nina Dobrev leaving the show, and Elena’s fate hanging in limbo as we wait to see if she will wake up during the final season.

The Vampire Diaries returns October 21 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
