Supernatural officially reaches its teenage years after being renewed for a 13th season, continuing its bid for being the longest running CW show. The announcement of Supernatural‘s renewal came during the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Sunday.
Along with Supernatural, The CW also renewed six other returning shows, including the entire superhero slate of The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Supergirl, and Arrow, as well as Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.
The fate of The CW’s other shows still remains to be seen. While No Tomorrow and Frequency also missed out on full season orders last fall, there’s still no word on the future of iZombie and The 100, though the network could be waiting to see how ratings fare when they both return for new seasons in April, while The Originals returns March 17.
The CW has certainly solidified itself as a staple in network genre storytelling, even creating its own DC superhero universe. Supernatural’s renewal probably comes as no surprise, but it’s still comforting to know The CW remains loyal to its long-running shows. A 13th season for Supernatural keeps the show on track for hitting that 300th episode milestone stars Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles mentioned last fall. 300 episodes would put the show midway into its 14th season. While most of these shows are on their midseason break, it’ll be good to not have to sit on the edge of our seats as their current seasons come to a close in a couple of months.
Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Frequency, and No Tomorrow returned from break this week, while Supergirl and Jane the Virgin returns January 23, The Flash and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow January 24, Arrow January 25, and Supernatural January 26.
