Netflix released the new trailer for its episodic interpretation of A Series of Unfortunate Events

The show will air on January 13th of the upcoming year, joining Netflix’s impressive roster of original programming.  Unfortunate Events will join Stranger Things as some of the few child actor starring shows produced by the online streaming site.

From the teaser it looks as if this new adaptation of Lemony Snicket’s beloved children’s books features similar quirky set dressing, but a lighter tone than the 2004 film version, which received mixed reviews. At this point it is unclear how much of the 13 books will be incorporated into the show, but hopefully fans of the novels will be able to see much of the characters unique adventures played out on screen. Neil Patrick Harris stars, in a number of outlandish costumes, as the evil Count Olaf, surrounded by a relatively unknown supporting cast and level-headed child actors, Malina Weissman and Louis Hynes, as the Baudelaire children.

With a cinematic score, playful set-pieces and a blend of dark and playful performances, A Series of Unfortunate Events looks like yet another weekend-absorbing Netflix hit.

Watch the trailer, though it warns of an unhappy conclusion, below.
