TV News: ‘The Mortal Instruments’ To Come Back on the Small Screen

TMI City of Bones cast still

Whatever you may think of The Mortal Instruments, it didn’t make all that great of a film. Cassandra Clare’s Shadowhunter series has too much going on for it to be squished into a two hour feature film. That, among other things, didn’t work in the film’s favor. Therefore, the film’s producers will be re-launching the series as a TV show.

“It actually makes sense to do (the novels) as a TV series,” Constantin film and TV head Martin Moszkowicz told THR. “There was so much from the book that we had to leave out of the Mortal Instruments film. In the series we’ll be able to go deeper and explore this world in greater detail and depth.”

Other YA series should take note of this move. Being an avid read of young adult novels, I often feel that television is the right path to choose when adapting the book series into this medium. It allows the story to be told in a more organic way and gives us enough time to meet, understand and become invested in the characters.

Production is expected to begin next year, and it’s likely the series will get a whole new cast. As to where the show will air, that’s still a big question. This reworking of a series that I enjoyed has me excited enough to check it out no matter whichever network, streaming service, website, etc. it ends up.
