The writers of The Carrie Diaries seem to be going into overdrive trying to convince people that their show is actually set in 1985. Two weeks ago they referenced 80’s wunderkind author Bret Easton Ellis, and last week they worked a story line around pop artist Andy Warhol. In this week’s episode 1×12 “A First Time For Everything” the writers have gone after the big kahuna herself – Madonna. It seems rather strange that now that the show is almost over for the season they’re finally pulling out the big stops when it comes to setting the scene. Of course, they could just be worried about how there’s a big chance CW won’t renew it for next season and they’re trying to rack up enough viewers to stall off cancellation. Whatever the reason, the classic Madonna songs that played throughout the episode were much appreciated.
The Madonna songs were probably the best things about the episode. While Dorrit and Mouse finally had more developed story lines, they still fell victim to the writers’ fast paced story arc template. The biggest flaw about The Carrie Diaries is how their story lines go from A to C without fleshing it out a bit with some more character development. It’s hard to connect to any character that isn’t Carrie because they are like cardboard- two dimensional and sometimes stale. The writers spend so much time on Carrie’s character that everyone else gets the scraps and it ends up causing some unbelievable or ridiculous moments for the characters.
The predicted blowout between Sebastian Kydd and Carrie happened in this episode. Carrie’s perfectionism and Kydd’s refusal to open up were the catalysts for the big fight. The two ended up breaking up and there’s a lot of doubt that the pair will reunite during the season finale. Their personalities were very different and it’s best if they stay friends. While the actors have really good chemistry together, their characters are polar opposites. If The Carrie Diaries gets another season hopefully Carrie gets another boyfriend that’s a bit more like her, or at least a string of flings to make Carrie more comfortable with relationships and give her more experience about love and life
While this episode had some tender moments with Dorrit and her new boyfriend, the majority of the episode felt rushed and filled with clichés
