Netflix originals have always been more hit than miss, so I have no reason to doubt Netflix’s newest supernatural series Stranger Things just yet, especially based on its first trailer. Creepy music, creepy kids, and a whole lot of mystery in a small town. What more do you need?

Stranger Things follows the mother of a young boy who goes missing. After gathering friends, family, and the police to join her search, they discover mysterious supernatural forces and government secrets. The show was co-created by Matt and Ross Duffer, whose previous writing credits include four episodes of the first season of Wayward Pines, another show that deals with the strange in a small town, which can only mean good things.

This trailer also has a very 80s, Spielbergian feel to it, and the YouTube synopsis of the show calls it a “love letter to the supernatural classics of the 80s.” I also can’t help but compare it to 2011’s Super 8, which was written and directed by JJ Abrams, whom was also heavily influenced by Steven Spielberg. Say what you will about that movie, but I always liked it for the camaraderie between the kids and I get that same feeling with the kids in the Stranger Things trailer. But the show also looks like it will focus heavily on Joyce’s (Winona Ryder) relentless search for her son, a sort of mother-will-do-anything-for-her-kids kind of thing, and I really dig that.

The show also stars David Harbour, Matthew Modine, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin and Noah Schnapp. All episodes will be available on Netflix July 15.
