‘Armed & Gelatinous’ Gameplay Interview with Robert Howland

In Armed and Gelatinous, you can control one of four blobs on an arena, each can be customized with different costumes and looks. In combat, players bound around the stage with an accessible control scheme to attack one another, grow as large as possible, and stick as many guns to your blobulous body as humanly possible. The game is packed with so many modes including a newly announced sports arena, but also your normal team deathmatches, free for alls and tournaments.

I really dug it. It’s a great couch party game, good for a quick pick up and play. Matches don’t outstay their welcome, and the game play is diverse enough that I can see sinking some serious time into the it. – Miles

Miles Stanton, TYF Contributor: Tell us about the game we’re playing here.

Rob Howland, Programmer/Designer: Well we’re playing Armed & Gelatinous, it’s a 4-player bullet hell space shooter. You know, a couch competitive style game.

M: It’s beautiful.

Rob: We’re trying to bring back that couch competitive era that we just know and love. GoldenEye, Mario Kart, that sort of thing.

M: Absolutely!

Rob: It’s just our bread and butter.

M: So, is the secret that one of these characters is slightly smaller than the others, the hitbox is just a little short?

Rob: Nah, we don’t have the Oddjob secret. No, no we don’t have that. It’d be funny if we did though.

Anthony Prusakowski, Marketing/Design : We do have a secret character.

Rob: We do have a secret character, from another indie game.

M: Really? Is that like spoilers, or?

Rob: No no, we have the secret character right here, though he’s very difficult to unlock…

Anthony: It’s almost impossible if you don’t know how to do it.

Rob: But we’ll give you the 411, we’ll give you the skinny. So you gotta choose Zed, the teal colored character. Then you have to set your name to ROM, as in Read Only Memories

M: Oh, oh!

Rob: …and you’ll unlock Turing, from Read Only Memories, which if you haven’t played is a very similar style game to Snatcher, one of Hideo Kojima’s original titles. So that’s our little secret character in here, and he’s pretty cool, we have his sound effects and everything. But beyond that, it’s a 4-player game, we’re building arcade cabinets for it…

M: They look beautiful! We’ve seen the photos, that is gorgeous.

Rob: Thank you. Yeah, we put a lot of love into that. It’s really a labor of love.

M: Absolutely.

Rob: We’ve only got two of em out there in California, but we’re building six more, they’re going to be all over the United States soon, so look out for those – Armed and Gelatinous cabinets, coming to your local arcade.

M: Bringing it back! The two cornerstones of video games – couch co-op and actual arcades.

Rob: Yeah, we’re bringing em back. We’re not messing around here.

M: Well I love it, it’s a real blast. [The game] is surprisingly frantic, you think you’re on top of it, like “Yeah I have literally every gun just sitting on me right now: but then you become a huge target. I dig it.

Rob: Well thank you. Yeah, becoming the boss is just, the best feeling. As soon as you take over and just start dominating. You get to that “blobinating” and “unblobable” and then you can catch on fire, it’s really great to be dominating; but just as easily you took the reigns, someone can dash attack you and steal all your guns, just like that *snaps*
