The first trailer for Ocean’s 8 is here

Ten years after the release of Ocean’s Thirteen, Warner Bros. has released the first trailer for Ocean’s 8. The film is set in the same universe as the previous Ocean’s trilogy, and not only has a cast that is mostly women, but one that acknowledges how diverse the female audience they’re courting actually is. Just challenge yourself to not find someone you like with a cast that includes names as wide-ranging as Sandra Bullock, Mindy Kaling, Cate Blanchett, Awkwafina, Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna, Anne Hathaway, and Sarah Paulson.

The film is directed by Gary Ross from a screenplay co-written with Olivia Milch, and will no doubt be getting the same sort of backlash as the all-female Ghostbusters did in 2016. It should be less vicious this time though, since Ocean’s 8 is a sequel rather than a reboot.

Even though they are not in the trailer, appearances indicate that Matt Damon (whose presence might actually be problematic now) and Carl Reiner–confirmed by IMDB— will be reprising their roles as Linus Caldwell and Saul Bloom, respectively. This begs the question of how Debbie is related to George Clooney’s Danny Ocean, which means there’ll probably be a lot of fan speculation and theorizing about the relationship.  Are they brother and sister or cousins?  Given Reiner and Damon’s involvement, it’s a safe bet to assume that Clooney and Bullock are siblings, but nothing will be confirmed until closer to the film’s release date.

What we do know is that Debbie Ocean (Sandra Bullock) has gathered a crew to pull off a seemingly impossible heist at New York City’s yearly Met Gala, with Cate Blanchett’s Lou taking on a similar role to that of Brad Pitt in the previous trilogy.

Ocean’s 8 is scheduled to be released on June 8, 2018.
