The ghost edit has struck yet again on Survivor. This time, Chelsea was the victim on Survivor: Ghost Island. What’s the ghost edit you might ask? Think of those quiet, under-the-radar players who rarely got any screen time during their run on Survivor, even though they survived countless rounds. You see them in the background, they’re occasionally in conversations/votes/twists, and they sometimes win challenges, but for whatever reason, the Survivor editors hated them and refused footage. Desi and JP from Survivor: Millennials vs. Gen X were in that group of castaways. Chelsea, with her vote off, joined the group.
Who was Chelsea? No clue. Throughout her time on Survivor: Ghost Island, she barely had any screen time. At the bare minimum, she was an emerging competition threat who seemed like a nice person. There’s a chance she could’ve won the game due to her competition prowess and social skills, but the lack of edit essentially confirmed that she wasn’t making it to the end. Chelsea was simply another number in the group who didn’t leave her mark when given the chance. Survivor: Ghost Island is most likely her last appearance on Survivor, so enjoy the time we have left with her as a player.
Kellyn, on the other hand, has left her mark, even if it was a bad play. She made the right move by being upfront about her double votes on Laurel; the others had done the math and it was clearly her who had the extra twist vote. It was better for her to own up to her moves and try to rebuild a relationship with Laurel than to lie. Unfortunately, the damage was already done and Laurel had distrust against Kellyn. It was a bad move for Kellyn to use the extra vote and because of that, their plans to turn on the men fell through. If Kellyn had not done that, Laurel would’ve been more open to work together and possibly turn on the Dom/Wendell or even Sebastian.
The loved ones challenge is an iconic staple in Survivor. Seeing the castaways break down emotionally upon reuniting with their family/friends is a heartwarming scene. You could feel the love right through the TV screen! And this is a challenge where the players are more determined to win than ever, so they usually put their all in. Sebastian raced through this obstacle course and he wanted to win badly. He’s played a behind-the-scenes type of game so far, but his choices for the prize winners possibly hurt his chances. The girls did not like being left out of the reward, and by selecting only men, he inadvertently created a conversation/alliance that could’ve turned the tide. He should’ve thought of people a bit more before selecting his three choices.
Wendell should’ve also thought of his actions. Sure, you never turn down an opportunity at a special power or a way to push yourself further in the game. However, he was already selected to enjoy in the reward challenge and he made such a big deal at being reunited with his father. His sheer joy at seeing his dad and begging to spend time with him was one of the reasons why Sebastian selected him in the first place. When Wendell threw that all away to go to Ghost Island, his move left a bitter taste in the mouth of the other players. If Laurel and Donathan had not stuck to the men’s alliance, Wendell would’ve been voted off because of this move. He’s lucky Laurel didn’t flip.
And his decision would’ve stung even more had he been voted off because his advantage meant nothing. The immunity challenge curse is still active. Wendell wasn’t able to redeem Malcolm’s loss at the final four as he was one of the first few to be eliminated. He took the gamble and unfortunately, it didn’t pay off.
Did Laurel and Donathan make the right choice? The tribe was split down the middle with three votes on Wendell and three votes on Chelsea – Laurel and Donathan had all the power. This move was a tough one due to the fact that they had closer relationships with Dom and Wendell. However, the boys had hidden immunity idols and a lot of powers. If there was any point to strike before it was too late to make the move, this was that moment.
Laurel and Donathan made the right move based on their alliances because now the boys will keep them protected for the next few rounds. On the other hand, time will tell if this decision could be what eliminates them if Domenick, Wendell or Sebastian win immunities and vote them out later down the line. At this Tribal Council, Laurel and Donathan couldn’t trust Kellyn, so it made perfect sense.
