With the new Star Wars about to be released in the next few days, it’s no surprise that Paramount released a new trailer for Annihilation highlighting Star Wars star Oscar Isaac.
But as much as we love Oscar Isaac – oh, and we do – there are so many other reasons we are excited for Alex Garland’s latest foray into science fiction. After blowing our minds the other year with Ex Machina, Garland is back to take us on another adventure, one where the stakes are more obvious but no less dangerous. Natalie Portman stars in the film and leads a group of scientists, played by Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Tessa Thompson (Thor: Ragnarok), and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), into unknown land to find out what attacked her now-comatose husband (played by Oscar Isaac).
The new trailer shares more footage, showing us more of the dangers that the crew faces, as well as convince me that I may need to take a chill pill or two before seeing this movie. If we can trust anyone to build up tension to insurmountable heights, it’s Garland. In addition to that, we can also trust the filmmaker to give us something intellectually stimulating. One thing I found funny as I watched the new trailer was how it kind of reminded of this past year’s Alien: Covenant, but I can’t imagine Annihilation being anywhere as frustratingly stupid as that film.
To add more to this, it was recently announced that Annihilation will be premiering on Netflix overseas just 17 days after its U.S. and Canada release in theaters. The decision was made after, reportedly, a clash between the film’s producers. According to The Hollywood Reporter, after a poor test screening, one of producers was concerned that film was too complex for audiences and argued to make Portman’s character more likable. Another producer sided with Garland, choosing to keep the film as is.
Annihilation arrives in U.S. theaters on February 23, 2018.
