This is why I saved DJANGO UNCHAINED for last, besides the fact that these past couple of weeks have been hectic for me and no time to write at all, from all of the movies at Comic-Con, this is my most anticipated one for this year. After all, Man of Steel, Pacific Rim and Iron Man 3 are coming out next year sooo yeah.
The panel featured cast members Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz, Kerry Washington, Walton Goggins, Don Johnson and of course, director Quentin Tarantino. The panel kicked-off with the backstory of how this project came together. Tarantino shared how he crafted the story about 13 years ago, he wanted to change the genre by making a spaghetti western that took place before the civil war, in which a black slave turned into a bounty hunter and killed white men. First of all, the bounty hunter that frees Django, Doctor King Schulz to whom Waltz refers to as Django’s Yoda, they both need each other throughout the film, after all, he is Django’s mentor and the one who teaches him how to shoot. Moving on, in order for Tarantino to make Jamie Foxx become Django, it took a lot of work, often telling him “you won’t be able to play this part because you’re Jamie Foxx“, Jamie then had to take on the role remembering the racism he faced as a child.
The clip shown in Hall H featured eight minutes of the film where they showed the friendship between Django and Schulz, and also showed Don Johnson’s character, Big Daddy, who is supposed to be both funny and evil, and also Kerry Washington’s character. Kerry’s character was born in a German owned plantation, making her character learn German and even sing it in the movie. Oh, and Tarantino also approached the rumor of Sacha Baron Cohen being in the film, which at the end his character’s story didn’t even make it into the final cut, and also mentioned that Jonah Hill is part of the cast.
