I went to see Arthur with sort of low expectations. I do love Russell Brand and Helen Mirren, but I wasn’t expecting the movie to be all that great. Well, going in with low expectations worked because the movie was funnier and cuter than I had imagined. Arthur is cute, full of funny moments, and doused with Russell Brand’s charm.
Russell Brand plays Arthur, the heir to a billionaire dollar company. Arthur is irresponsible, an alcoholic, and naïve. I mean, the dude still has a nanny (Helen Mirren) looking after him. In order to help settle Arthur down, his mother gives him an ultimatum: either marry one of her trusted advisors (Jennifer Garner) or get cut off from all the money. The choice becomes even more difficult after he meets and falls in love with Naomi (Greta Gerwig), a tour guide from Queens.
The best scenes of the movie are the ones with both Brand and Mirren. Without those two, this movie would’ve been terrible. They balance each other out, and their relationship was more compelling than Arthur’s romantic one with Naomi. Greta Gerwig is cute and sincere as Naomi, and Jennifer Garner is.. uh..feisty? as Arthur’s evil fiancee.
As I mentioned before, I love Russell Brand; I think he’s hilarious. So, it was hard for me not to enjoy this movie. His usual humor is toned down a bit because of the PG-13 rating, but nonetheless, he did have me laughing throughout the film.
Plot-wise, the movie is pretty predictable. If you’re expecting some kind of deep story-telling, then don’t bother watching Arthur. People, who love Brand already, will definitely enjoy this film. If you don’t like him, then stay away from this movie. I won’t say it’s better than his comedy last year, Get Him To The Greek, because it isn’t.
Do I want to see Arthur again? Not really, but I don’t regret seeing it. I had a fun and enjoyable time, and Brand-loving audiences will most likely agree. If anything, I would definitely suggest renting this flick instead of seeing it in theaters.
Arthur will release in theaters on April 8th.
