Jenna is prepping for her new life as a “sophisticated, fabulous undergraduate.” I’m still confused about where these people get their ideas about college. Jenna and Tamara are avoiding the fact that they aren’t planning on attending the same college. To ignore this further, they have a girls’ night to send out their applications together.
Matty, continuing his chilly attitude towards Jenna that began when she neglected to come to his jailbird rescue, asks her to send over his college essay. While Matty is driving later, he asks Eva to check his phone for an email from Jenna with his essay. After reading through what looks like weeks of texts between Matty and Jenna, Eva finds her email and deletes it, claiming Jenna never sent it. That bitch move sends Matty fuming.
Luke crashes girl’s night with concert plans to celebrate Jenna turning in her college applications. Tamara almost leaves—third wheeling is “sagic” (sadly tragic) and she’s not going to do it. Jenna does the good friend thing (points, J!) and tells Luke she can’t go see the jazz band with him due to her prior plans. He offers to take them for froyo and then ditch—he’s the type of guy who likes saying he likes jazz more than he actually likes jazz. All right Luke, you win points for your understanding and honesty. The trio goes off to have a great time, taking care to post all about it on social media. With Eva’s encouragement, Matty goes to the froyo place to confront Jenna. Matty is completely out of line, but Jenna isn’t having it and tells Matty to go find his essay himself.
It’s Val’s high school reunion and she’s after her former crush, played by Teddy from the CW’s 90210. While Teddy is hitting on Ma Lacey, his former high school girlfriend is calling Val “Valgina” and talking about the time she made up a rumor about Val being a hermaphrodite. Val hooks up with Teddy but doesn’t have sex with him—“His P might as well have been a V,” she explains to Ma Lacey. That heinouse former-girlfriend-turned-wife mishears and thinks Val had sex with her husband anyway. This entire plot point was very Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion-lite—except boring.
Sadie enlists Lissa and Jake to help her and Sergio run the German food truck. After watching Sadie be rude to workers and costumers alike, Lissa yells, “Sadie! Stop being such a nasty bitch!” I didn’t even know Lissa had it in her. Sadie is shocked but didn’t fight back, demonstrating that brutal honesty works both ways in their best friendship. Lissa’s hostile takeover is met with cheers from the customers.
After Matty emails himself his essay from Jenna’s laptop, Eva tries to seduce him on top of Jenna’s bed. Even in the midst of his Bad Boy Matty Phase, Matty can’t do that to Jenna—it’d be too weird. To prove that he’s ready to move on even though he won’t have sex on his ex-girlfriend’s bed (dick move, Eva), he deletes all of his texts/emails with Jenna. As they’re leaving, Eva goes back to “get her phone.” She’s a liar, and not even a good one.
Jenna and Tamara send in their applications and watch The Notebook to commemorate the end of their Jamara college roommate dreams. Tamara finds Eva’s underwear and the two are understandably skeeved. At school, Jenna tosses the panties back to Eva in front of a shocked Tamara, Lissa, and Sadie. I hope these four ladies band together to take Eva down, because they have the potential to be the dream team. She keeps her cool and lays it out for Eva: “Matty and I aren’t in a good place, but he would never fuck you in my bed.” My girl Jenna, ladies and gentlemen. That line wins this episode, hands down.
“My Personal Statement” was a great episode for Jenna. She didn’t fall prey to Eva’s manipulation and kept her cool in some uncomfortable situations. I’m looking forward to them going toe to toe next week. The only drawback in the episode was Val’s storyline—it was filler, and not even entertaining filler.
Next week on Awkward.: Senior ski trip! Jenna and Eva antagonize each other, Luke is over the high school dramz, and Sadie discovers that Eva isn’t who she says she is. Undercover cop?? STAY TUNED!
Episode Rating: 8.5/10
